The Yamaha guitar has been around for over 60 years and the company itself for over 100 years. For the next 40+ years, Yamaha’s company made organs, pianos, harmonicas, furniture, phonographs and finally their first acoustic guitar in 1942. In 1965, a year after The Beatles made their legendary Ed Sullivan Show appearance, Yamaha began production of solid body guitars.

The Yamaha guitars were being built to produce a powerful warm tone with amazing sustain. One of the reasons behind the success of the Yamaha guitar is the targets that they shoot for in their design. Every guitar must have a balanced tone and response and the bass and treble must complement each other.

Yamaha want to make sure that their guitars both look great and have every chance to breathe.

Some of the great artists that have played Yamaha guitars over the years are Michael Anthony, John Denver, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Brian May, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, Bob Seger, Billy Sheehan, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen and James Taylor.

A Brief History Of Yamaha Electric Guitars

With over a hundred years of experience manufacturing musical instruments, Yamaha is universally acknowledged as the producer some of the world’s finest instruments. In the wake of this Yamaha began producing solid body electric guitars at their Hamamatsu facility in 1965 and early models of both electric and electric bass guitars debuted in 1966.

By the mid 1970’s legendary guitar artists such as Carlos Santana began to use Yamaha Guitars eschewing some of the great American brand names in favour of the unique features and superb build quality provided by these instruments. With the ringing endorsement of legendary musicians such as Bob Marley, Steve Cropper, Phil Manzanera, and Carlos Rios, Yamaha’s SG range of guitars had sealed their place amongst the elite manufacturers of electric guitars.

From there on Yamaha Guitars have gone from strength to strength, not just producing the instruments we see being used by some of the worlds great guitar innovators, but also truly blazing a trail in the production of high quality, affordable instruments for beginners and intermediate players alike.

At the end of the 1980’s Yamaha Guitar Development opened in North Hollywood, California. In the same way that the SG2000 took the electric guitar world by storm, in 1977 the release of the Yamaha “Broad Bass” or BB1200 bass guitar turned the world of bass guitarists upside down. Yamaha guitars are very close to their hearts at Chappell’s Wardour Street, London store.
